About this group
The goal is to deliver a path finder project providing renewable energy heating for a grass roots multi-sports club.
There are three main aims of this project. Reduce our carbon footprint. make our facilities more affordable, especially for children's sport and inspire other sports clubs like ourselves to adopt this technology. We commissioned an evaluation study with the help of a grant from the CSEP which showed an air source heat pump and PV cells would help achieve our aims. Following this our capital grant application to CSEP has also been successful. Our club provides facilities for rugby, football, golf, aussie rules, canoeing, boules and other ad hoc sports. We are the only Club with a rugby/football certified all weather match pitch in the region which provides for over 50 hours sports a week, as well as two other grass pitches and a rubber crumb multi use games area. Over 25 teams and 700 players use the club each week. This has placed a tremendous demand on heating in general and for showers in particular. The increase in fuel prices has to be passed on to our users and we want to do something to reduce these costs and help other clubs to follow in our footsteps. As far as we know there are no other similar community clubs using this technology. This not a theoretical demonstration project but one that will delivery very tangible benefits to many for decades. It will be highly visible to "home" players as well as away teams across the North West. Stockport MBC, the RFU and FA all support our project and will help give it National prominence.
Sport is a powerful influence for good, self discipline, health, confidence, team work and others. It is also important to start early with children. There are over 30 officially deprived areas in Manchester and Stockport within 5 miles of our site. By reducing our costs we can make our facilities affordable to the many not the few. We can also prove to others it can be done in their communities.
