About this group
Edwalton school was an eco-school well before it was fasionable!
Edwalton is the only primary school in England with a working farm and a 3 acre wood attached to the school grounds. The farm, with chickens, goats, sheep, pigs and bees, began in 1972/3. The organic food we grow is used in the school kitchen and the local community.
Edwalton school is bidding for funding for solar panels and energy savings kit to save carbon and generate income to support the school farm.
We are a recognised UK leader in sustainability, particularly with regards to sustainable food, agriculture, nature conservation and student participation in environmental conservation and agricultural activities.
We dont teach sustainability at Edwalton we live it. While our school is already green from the ground up, renewable energy and energy saving lights will make us green to the rafters and beyond! With our own energy sources, environmental sustainability in the school becomes a fully integrated system, greater than the sum of its parts! Making self reliance fun, inspiring and permanent,
While our commited student eco-team recycle, reuse, switch off and turn down everything they can, we still have some way to go in terms of our energy use. Last year we replaced our boiler and dramatically cut our heating energy use and carbon emissions. This year we want to take another leap forward and install solar panels, LED lighting and advaced smart metering to reduce our electricty use.
Solar panels could provide 25 years gauranteed income for the school to help fund the school farm, local community food production and education for sustainability in an era of rising energy and food costs, when cutting carbon emissions is essential to ensure a sustainable environment for our children.

" The children here are an absolute credit. This school reflects my life’s work and all we stand for. In an age of processors and computers, play stations and iPod nanos some things will always be true. The children here speak about the farm, animals, woods and the staff when they leave. We are an international school with children of many creeds, colours and backgrounds. We reflect the rich diversity found in the city of Nottingham and I am immensely proud of what we are trying to achieve. Whenever children or staff leave here for the next part of their journey this is what they remember and take with them."
