What did you think about the renewable electricity the groups on the show were producing themselves and helping the Boys with? Could you run an electric vehicle or have you been inspired to go the whole hog and generate your own green electricity?

Watched the show and want to get some renewable electricity like the boys?
You can watch exclusive cuts from episode two here, showing the Dartmoor Woodfuel Coop. The boys get stuck into some wood-chopping and are rewarded with a biomass-heated jacuzzi.
The 'big gut' biodigester looked impressive...wondering how fast this idea could spread and the real basic cash and carbon costs / benefits? Will check their profile and I now know where to surf this summer!
Hi Daren, apologies for the delay, I was being inspired on a course at the Eden Project last week!
Its a great show isn't it? Our bio Digester is by a company called Bio Nova, based in Oakehampton. We actually put up to 4 tonnes of food waste a week into it now and in 72 hours, using microbes, a paddle that turns every 5 minutes and heated to 70c it produces an inert fuel that burns in our 46kw biomass boiler. We are saving by avoiding landfill costs of all that food waste tonnage and on our gas bills in the restaurants and Extereme Academy, (where we supply hot showers etc). On top of that we have applied for the Renewable Heat Incentive and with all this, we are looking at under a 5 year payback, for a six figure scheme. We think its worth it, it does take some managing as with any biomass boiler and fuel supply, but by training the staff who create and clear the food waste and our brilliant waste team, we have a simple process that works!
I am afraid I am still working on a spredsheet with actual cost breakdowns and heat ouputs, carbon saved etc, but happy to share this with you when we have more data?
Kind Regards
Amy
Hi there,
Great to hear the details of the bio digester, pretty impressive stuff. Here's an extra video too of the Three Hungry Boys getting stuck into the waste - when Amy gives them a good lesson in biodigester mechanics. Impressed to hear it helped increase recycling levels from 30% to 85% too!
Thanks for sharing Amy, be interesting to hear how many other communities are looking at biogesters after seeing the one at Watergate Bay.
