Residents of Reepham in Norfolk have clubbed together to set up energy saving and renewable energy projects across the town. In the process they’venot only cut their CO2 emissions by 88 tonnes they have also created a network of community champions who now lead projects and help others get involved. University Hospital South ManchesterManchester garden feature

The University Hospital of South Manchester (UHSM) has been awarded the title of Britain’s Greenest Hospital. UHSM is a large and busy city hospital that treats over 750,000 patients   with services including A&E, specialist cardiac, cystic fibrosis and cancer centres. Saving  energy means saving money, which goes back into patient care. And this year UHSM saved around £470,000 through these energy projects. Read more about University Hopital South Manchester >

BMX Bandits BMX Bandits

The Bradford Bandits is a volunteer run club that provides bikes, helmets and protective clothing as well as British Cycling qualified coaches to train riders up to national and international competition level, offering them the chance at an Olympic sport. The club manages to engage a large volume of young people in the area by being able to charge only £2 per visit. They had floodlights installed to offer winter and late night sessions but were facing having to double their charges to cover electricity costs. Such an increase would have made it too expensive for many of the children and the club faced having to limit their opening hours. Read more about the BMX Bandits >


Talybont

Talybont Energy

Talybont-on-Usk is the first village in Wales to have their own community owned hydro. They sell all the energy generated into the grid to produce income that they then invest in community projects. So far, they have funded a cinema screen in their town hall, an electric car share club, and have financially supported Talybont residents to trial a variety of energy saving measures, including an electric bike scheme, energy audits and trials of energy meters, which have all helped them learn about ways they can have an impact on their energy use. Woolsery HallWoolsery Hall

The residents of the village of Woolsery in Devon wanted to update their drafty old community hall with a new one that would have more facilities, be warm, inviting and sustainable. Through a number of grants, the people of Woolsery were particularly lucky to afford to completely rebuild their hall and take advantage of the opportunity to maximise energy efficiency opportunities. Mid Argyll Swimming PoolMid Argyll Pool

The Mid Argyll Pool is a bustling community swimming pool which is 100 per cent heated by renewable energy using a biomass boiler. The heating covers the pool water, room temperature and the hot water for the showers. Heating costs are usually a significant financial drain on community pools and before the biomass boiler was installed, the Mid Argyll Pool was heated by an oil boiler which was expensive to run.
