About this group
Based in an eco-refurbished Victorian terrace house a mile from Sheffield city centre, South Yorkshire Energy Centre (SYEC) is a walk-in education and information centre with a focus on domestic energy efficiency, affordable warmth, renewable energy and low carbon living. We are part of the environmental education charity, Heeley City Farm. We are the only facility like this in the Sheffield area - we have been open to the public since 2006. Last year over 1,700 children and young people learned how to become ‘Fuel Busters’ and how they could help create an environmentally sustainable world. Another nearly 2,500 individuals, including householders and community group members, visited the Energy House for free, impartial advice and information.
We’ve submitted our application for energyshare funding to support the delivery of our Energycoaching project. Working with householders from across Sheffield,Energycoachingwill assist them to save energy, carbon and money through a combination of better understanding of their energy usage, behaviour change and the installation of minor energy efficiency measures. This three-year project builds on SYEC’s ten-plus years’ experience and enviable track record of in-depth energy advice and home visits, and incorporates learning from other energy advice programmes.
We absolutely agree with Russell Smith of Parity Projects when he says that ‘every home is unique … [there is] no one-size-fits-all solution’. With financial support from the energyshare Fund, Energycoaching will offer a service, unique in Sheffield, of personalised and sustained support for individuals and households, facilitating them to take steps to improve the energy efficiency of their homes in ways and over timescales that are appropriate to their personal and financial circumstances. Working alongside major schemes such as the Sheffield Free Insulation Scheme, Energycoaching will consolidate the carbon savings made through enabling matching behaviour change.
