About this group
Teign Estuary Transition is bidding for funding from EnergyShare to make simple improvements to lighting in buildings used by communities in Teignmouth and Shaldon.
The sites we are working with are the Alice Cross Centre, Kingsway Meadow Centre, and TAAG Centre (Teignmouth Arts Action Group). We have organised electrical inspections which have identified scope to make up to 40% savings in electricity-use.
Teignmouth and Shaldon are connected by a ferry service and bridge over the River Teign in South Devon. Teignmouth town is a working port with nearly 15,000 residents as well as being a seaside holiday resort. Shaldon village is popular for holidays and has a population of 1,600.
Teign Estuary Transition is a local initiative aiming to move towards a low energy, sustainable future. We are a group of local people who are concerned about the twin challenges of diminishing oil and gas supplies, known as ‘Peak Oil’, and climate change.
If our bid is successful, work will include upgrading to modern energy-efficient light fittings, and/or installing sensors to control use when lights aren’t needed. These simple actions will save money for each organisation, reduce carbon emissions and, we hope, will also provide an example to inspire further energy-saving actions in Teignmouth and Shaldon. Having made these initial efficiencies, each site would be in a better position to consider renewable energy installations in future.
